Gaushala · Kothar, Rajasthan

A safe home for every cow.

We take in cows who have been abandoned, hurt on the road, or turned out once they stopped giving milk — and we keep them for the rest of their lives.

Our story ·

Why this gaushala exists

The foundation began in 2021 with a handful of cows nobody else would take. Today a hundred of them live here, in Gaon Kothar, Bali tehsil, Pali district. Gau seva here is daily and unglamorous: fodder before sunrise, wounds cleaned and dressed, water tanks filled, every animal counted before dark.

What we do · हम क्या करते हैं

Four things, done every day

Rescue

A call comes in about a cow hit on the highway or left tied outside a village. We reach her, lift her, and bring her back the same day.

Medical care

Wound dressing, deworming, fracture care and vaccination, with a visiting veterinarian for anything we cannot treat ourselves.

Shelter & feed

Shade in the summer, dry ground in the monsoon, and 250 kg of green fodder and dry chara served through the day.

Sponsorship

One cow, one family, for a month or a year. You get her name, her photograph, and word of how she is doing.

Meet the herd ·

A hundred cows. These five, to start.

Nandi, a white bullock with a beaded browband

Nandi

Came in last winter, thin and lame. Now first at the trough.

Gauri, a young calf standing in the shelter yard

Gauri

Brought in as a week-old calf. She follows the feed cart everywhere.

Nandini, a young calf standing under a tree

Nandini

Found on the Bali road with a broken leg. Walks well now, slowly.

Ganga and her calf feeding on green fodder

Ganga

Rescued with her calf. The two of them still graze side by side.

Bhola, a pale calf standing at a gate

Bhola

Blind in one eye, entirely unbothered by it. Keeps close to Lakshmi.

From the gaushala ·

Panchgavya, made here

Bilona ghee, gaumutra ark, cow-dung diyas and khaad, prepared at the shelter by the people who look after the herd. Everything you buy pays for fodder.
